Berk-Tek recently announced details of its new 1,500-foot (457-metre) UTP copper cable package option called smartPAK. The company says the package option will allow more runs out of one box of cable, which will substantially reduce scrap.

“(It) was developed after listening closely to feedback from many of our contractors who asked for an (offering) that could take into account today’s realistic field lengths,” said Brian Simmons, Berk-Tek’s copper product manager. “The 1,500-foot option provides more cable pulls per box, less scrap, fewer box changeovers, reduced cardboard waste and saves space at the job site."

A standard 1,000-foot (305-metre) box of UTP cable allows three 300-feet (91-metre) pulls, which is the maximum length allowed by the TIA-568-C standards), leaving 10% as leftover scrap.

The smartPAK packaging option is available in all of  Berk-Tek’s four core UTP products, in both plenum and riser versions:

* LANmark-1000 (enhanced Category 6);

* LANmark-6 (standard Category 6);

* LANmark-350 (enhanced Category 5e); and,

* Hyper Plus 5e (standard Category 5e).
