WireIE, a Canadian network carrier based in Richmond Hill, Ont., has donated 10 Lenovo laptop computers, six Apple iPad tablets and two HP wireless printers to be used by students of a small two room community-focused school that serves the remote town of Nestor Falls, Ont.
The school, which is among one of the few remaining schools of its size in the province, will create a one-to-one access ratio for laptops among intermediate and junior level students, while simultaneously creating wireless printing access for students and faculty as a result of the donation.
In addition, shared access to iPads among the primary level students will enhance digital literacy among the youngest students of the school and help to advance the overall goal of the school board’s strategic plan for the use of technology as a learning tool in schools, the company said in release
Heather Campbell, director of education for the Rainy River District School board, said the donation “supports an important goal that has been identified by our trustees within the board’s Strategic Plan — purposeful, responsible and innovative use of technology as a communication and learning tool.”
The idea for the contribution emerged during discussions the company had with the board regarding a request for access rights by the carrier to an existing communications tower located on the property of Robert Moore School in Fort Frances.
The Rainy River District School Board serves an estimated 3,000 students in Early Learning/Kindergarten through to Grade 12 in 11 elementary schools and three high schools located across 320 kilometres from Rainy River to Atikokan in northwest Ontario.
